Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle upon Tyne
Completed May 2026, Installed June 2026
Situated in the 1867 hall of the Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The mural is a 9ft x 9ft painted, stretched canvas based on the theatre’s heritage that fills a wall in the venue’s recently developed 1867 Hall.
The design features a view of the auditorium, looking towards the stage and highlighting details of the auditorium décor. The design also includes 'behind the scenes' elements, such as original stencil motifs uncovered during recent restoration work in the upper floors of the theatre.
Other details featured within the mural are prints made during a series of community workshops which took place in April 2026. Led by Lucy, the workshops focused on using heritage items and photographic reference to produce both lino printing and collagraph prints, utilising recycled materials wherever possible.
The finished mural provides a point of interest for those using the Hall during both daytime sessions and evening performances, encouraging the public to discuss the theatre’s history and its ongoing heritage work.
The project was supported by Creative Central NCL.
